March 6, 2008 – Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a leading cause of childhood visual impairment which, when severe, can cause permanent visual impairment and blindness. In the United States, ROP causes an estimated 2100 pediatric cases of visual impairment, including 700 cases of permanent blindness, per year. ROP primarily affects premature infants weighing about 2 3/4 pounds (1250 grams) or less that are born before 31 weeks of gestation.

In ongoing efforts to address the management and prevention of ROP, MidAtlantic Neonatology Associates (MANA) proudly sponsored a special dinner conference for neonatal healthcare providers in the greater New Jersey region on ROP. The guest lecture was given by Dr. Robert Lopez, a retinal specialist with extensive experience in managing severe ROP in premature infants. This educational and collaborative event was videotaped to help ensure that activities such as these can continue to serve as an ongoing resource for the healthcare community. This is one of a series of special dinner conferences featuring guest lecturers sponsored by MANA.
